Disability Initiative Workgroup

The Advocacy Center is Florida's federally mandated protection and advocacy system which provides direct advocacy services to people with disabilities. In the 2009 tax year, the Advocacy Center piloted a VITA tax initiative using our offices as a mobile tax site. We did targeted outreach via direct mail, media strategies and word of mouth to persons with disabilities in the Big Bend area of Florida. In the 2010 tax season, we are looking to expand on the pilot initiative by partnering with the United Way of Big Bend BEST Project, which includes eight VITA sites in Leon County and two AARP sites. As a first step in this collaboration, the Advocacy Center hosted a two day training event in conjunction with IRS SPEC.  We are expanding our outreach to include clients of VR, the Lighthouse of the Big Bend and Big Bend Mental Health. We will be appearing at an event for Big Bend Mental health in January, and at the Florida Vision Summit in February. We are looking to expand the direct mail outreach. We are exploring additional partnership opportunities within the disability community which we will make available once confirmed.
