Disability Initiative Workgroup

San Diego Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities (SDCEPD) is an all volunteer nonprofit organization that advocates for people with disabilities by increasing opportunities for employment by collaborating with other private, public and non-profit organizations. There are approximately 150 agencies and organizations that provide services to people with disabilities. Our focus is to collaborate with the agencies and organizations that share a similar mission with SDCEPD in increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities. We were successful in getting nearly 50 agencies and organizations to our kick off meeting in January 2009. We are very optimistic that this trend will continue as we attempt to forge a structured and organized coalition of agencies and organizations whose mission is similar to ours and aligns with the REI Tour Disability Initiative. We are also working with our local United Way who is the pivot point for all VITA sites in San Diego County. We intend to step up our efforts this year to earmark VITA sites that can not only accommodate people with disabilities, but understand the needs and challenges of people with disabilities with regard to Tax preparation and asset building.

Our committee membership has grown exponentially over the past year primarily due to our outreach efforts to get more people involved and through the outstanding reputation that this committee has forged over the past couple of years. People are seeing results which serve as our measuring stick to evaluate if we are meeting our goals and reaching our constituents. We intend to continue our efforts in reaching out to employers, to educate them and to provide the resources they need to actively recruit, integrate and retain people with disabilities into their companies. There are a large number of resources available to disabled job seekers, but little for employers. We also intend to expand our outreach to disabled military veterans. We will have one major community event planned for March 2010. We anticipate participation from the Mayors office including the Mayor himself. We will run information on our website throughout the Tax season and beyond. We will be the conduit to other organizations that provide employment services to people with disabilities thereby increasing awareness and hopefully improving the quality of life for people with disabilities.
