Disability Initiative Workgroup

Our REI Tour workgroup was very active during the past year. We created and printed specialized postcards and flyers/posters to be utilized by organizations in the Central Florida area that are serving persons with disabilities to encourage them to file for the EITC. Over 250 posters/flyers were distributed, as well as 2500 of the specialized postcards to be mailed. We also assisted in dispersing the printed materials created by Heart of Florida United Way for the local Prosperity Campaign. On December 12th of 2008, we held an Asset Building Summit breakfast and seminar at Goodwill in Orlando. We had 47 attendees from various organizations. From this successful event, it was decided to form an REIT Work Group, including representatives from the IRS, SSA, Orange County Public Schools, Orange County Office for ADA, Workforce Central Florida, and many other organizations serving persons with disabilities in Central Florida.

The REIT Work Group began meeting in February, 2009. Two subcommittees were formed, one to spearhead the creation of a tool that organizations could present to clients going into an employment situation. It would give them the critical contact information they might need to retain employment and learn about financial asset-building. The second subcommittee was created to analyze the need for an event targeting persons with disabilities in the Central Florida area, bringing together the vendor resources they might need to gain employment and begin building their financial assets. As a result, a wallet card was created for clients to carry with them while job-searching or after they have gone to work, giving them the contact information they might need.

Additionally, a Community Resource and Financial Fitness Fair was held at Goodwill Industries on October 20th, 2009, bringing together over 45 representatives from community resources and 65 persons with disabilities in need of assistance to fully develop their opportunities to begin developing their financial assets or to find the community resources they needed to gain employment. Seminars were also included throughout the Fair, allowing participants the opportunity to learn more about the EITC and Asset-Building, as well as to learn more about SSA, the IRS SPEC, the process of applying for services from the Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and bringing it all together with the Advocacy Center. Not only did the 65 attendees gain one-on-one assistance with their questions, but there was incredible synergy developed among the community vendors present. During the tax season, Goodwill provided physical locations for four VITA sites in three different Central Florida counties. Additionally, a specialized tax preparation site was held at Goodwill's main offices in Orlando in March. Financial Workshops were also offered throughout the summer months in our Brevard County Self-Sufficiency Job Center, in conjunction with SCORE and the local United Way. Goodwill staff attended the Florida Prosperity Partnership's initial annual conference during mid-2009 and has continued to be active in the Heart of Florida United Way's Prosperity Campaign, serving on its community advisory council.
