United Way of the Bay Area’s Earn It ! Keep It! Save It!

Earn It! Keep It! Save It! LogoThe Earn It! Keep It! Save It! (EKS) Disability Initiative of United Way of the Bay Area (UWBA) works closely with the World Institute on Disability, IRS SPEC, and local centers for independent living. In January 2012, UWBA offered disability awareness training to our VITA Site Coordinators. For the 2012 tax season, Community Resources for Independent Living in Hayward and Center for Independent Living operated a VITA site. And the Lighthouse for the Blind offered a free tax preparation special event.

Because 15% of survey respondents answered "yes" when asked if they or anyone in their household has a disability, EKS is aware of the need for these services and increased awareness. For the future, EKS hopes to target our advertising to people with disabilities through local disability organizations and plans to increase the use of accommodation statements.

EKS also uses the traditional channels for advertising free tax preparation: 100,000 postcards, thousands of posters, customizable e-flyers, paycheck stuffers, refer-a-friend cards, and flyers listing all VITA, AARP Tax-Aide and Tax-Aid locations. The flyers with site listings indicate languages and accessibility. The newest addition to our marketing plan will be our online site registration and tax site finder. Users will be able to find free tax preparation locations that are accessible and provide American Sign Language interpretation. This same database of locations is available to not only website users, but our 2-1-1 call centers as well.
