Disability Initiative Workgroup

Goodwill has emerged as not only an active member of the EIKISI Collaborative but as one of its leaders. At the national level, the participation in the REI Tour and the support receved are of critical importance; they validate and solidify our commitment to asset development work. Like in the past, Goodwill will hold special tax preparation events in collaboration with other agencies serving people with disabilities but we are reaching out to more partners this year. We hope that these agencies will eventually become independent VITA sites but it takes the time to get their buy-in. These agencies are extremely overburdened in the current economy which makes it difficult to get them on board unless asset development can be integrated into their mission. For this reason, Goodwill remains the leader of this effort but we also face a difficult challenge of needing to do more with less. In order to further grow the Disability Initiative, we need to find creative ways to dedicate more staff to increase outreach to people with disabilities. The current recession and limited resources require creative approaches to making it happen. Thus, we established a part-time AmeriCorps position to support Goodwill's VITA effort. With this position, we anticipate to increase our capacity by at least 25%.
