Disability Initiative Workgroup

Indianapolis has more than15 partners engaged in the local Disability Initiative (DI). Although there has been no formal DI workgroup established, Indianapolis SPEC staff coordinate local and statewide DI Education & Outreach, Free Tax Preparation and Financial Literacy/Asset Building strategies. Indianapolis focuses on integrating specific DI information and materials into all appropriate education/outreach and tax preparation opportunities. Specific successful Education & Outreach actions targeted to the disability community include providing EITC and Disability Initiative materials/publications to organizations who directly serve the disability community and their families throughout Indiana. In addition, Indianapolis SPEC staff partnered with the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community to train more than 250 benefit counselors during FY 2009 on EITC, the interaction of EITC with other government benefit programs and DI issues. Each of these counselors interface with at least 100 clients annually. EITC and DI materials have been incorporated into the Benefit Information Network Training Programs written course material which is used in statewide benefits counselor training. Economic Stimulus Package and Recovery Rebate Credit information was provided to all partner organizations, particularly those serving persons with disabilities. Indianapolis SPEC staff worked successfully with TAS and LITC partners to provide DI information to the disabled and homeless veteran community in Indianapolis at various homeless veteran focused outreaches and the Homeless Connect annual event.

The Indianapolis Territory is excited about a newly expanded partnership with the Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (MIG) Leadership Council. An Indianapolis Territory SPEC person is now on the MIG Leadership Council which helps establish the strategic plan for MIG funded projects. The MIG Leadership Council has determined that developing and increasing access to financial literacy information/materials and asset building tools for persons with disabilities is a priority. Additional opportunities to build and develop strong partnerships with other organizations focused on the needs of the disabled community are expected due to the inclusion of a SPEC staff person on the MIG Leadership Council.
