Disability Initiative Workgroup

The Hawaii Centers for Independent Living (HCIL) has operated since June of 1981 as a non-profit, statewide, organization run by and for people with disabilities.  Our mission is “to ensure the rights of people with disabilities to live independently, fully integrated in the community.”  Establishing centers for independent living provided the venue for people with disabilities to determine their own goals and types of needed services.  We believe that those who best know the needs of people with disabilities are the individuals with disabilities themselves.  HCIL established a practice of consumer control, in which people with disabilities actively participate in setting and achieving their own goals.   In such a process, they are empowered to advocate for more active roles in the delivery of services intended to address their personal needs and desires. In 2010 we plan to expand to the other islands that can help the Deaf consumers.  Additional ASL interpreters would be very helpful and VITA  will be able to work with the interpeter to communcate with the Deaf consumers.
