Disability Initiative Workgroup

Iowa Disability Coalition - Our effort is focused on building a disability coalition as a subcommittee of the EITC & Beyond Coalition.  Poverty is a disability issue.  The strategies to address poverty are largely appropriate whether one has a disability or not.  There are a few particulars that need to be considered due to some of the benefits specific to people who experience disability.  The disability coalition will work to address those specific issues without duplicating the effort, activities and policy agendas of the larger coalition.  The purpose of the Iowa Disability Coalition is to make sure that people with disabilities are a part of any asset development initiatives.
Future Workgroup Goals:

  • Establish a permanent EITC Disability Coalition by adding representative to the current group.  Additional members will include representative of Centers for Independent Living, the Arc of Iowa, People First Chapters, and provider agencies
  • Develop a standardized presentation
  • Provide trainings in person, via conference call and over the ICN for people with disabilities.
  • Encourage and assist those individuals and groups to become members of local coalitions and, in. the event there is not a coalition in their area, consider creating one.
