Disability Initiative Workgroup

In 2009 (and to be replicated in 2010), our workgroup informed persons with disablities about free tax service opportunities through flyers, brochures, and posters distributed in agencies, job fairs, faith community fairs, homeless fair, health clinics, food pantries, stores, senior centers, recreation centers, WIC nutrition offices, and a wide array of neighborhood locations. The 2-1-1 Texas InfoLine North Central Texas, Dallas Region provided VITA site information to callers throughout the tax season. Communication tools also included newsletter articles, website postings, blast emails to disability and social service coalitions and aging and disability resource centers. Activities included tax workshops and presentations for consumers and agencies. Media partner Reading & Radio Resource (RRR) aired public service announcements and interviews with IRS staff. RRR provides alternatives to reading for those who have visual or physical disabilities and/or learning differences.

As the collaborations reach out to the general population about tax credits in our community we are introducing our workgroup to them and establishing linkages for synergy. We are reaching out to the national and local organizations who partner with NDI on the national level (such as the Workforce Center's Disability Navigator), many of whom are member agencies of the Community Council or are participating in the Community Transportation Network, to encourage them to join our workgroup. We are planning a special community workshop for persons with disabilities and the agency staff that serve them to allay concerns about the interaction of tax credits and public benefits and give them information about the local VITA sites and financial literacy/asset building resources. We would like to involve the affinity group of the local REI Tour funders to be involved in our workgroup this year.
