Disability Initiative Workgroup - Plans for 2010

The Louisiana Workforce Commission’s Disability Program Navigator (DPN) Initiative is an active member of numerous interagency collaborations including: the Work Pays Coalition, Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (MIG) Advisory Council, Medicaid Purchase Plan (MPP) Advisory Committee, Office for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities (OCDD) Regional Advisory work group, Tensas Parish Transition and CORE Team, and the Awareness Committee for Citizens with Disabilities. Working within these established networks, we will develop a referral process for clients to take advantage of the free tax services and asset building opportunities that will be available.  DPNs will work with the REI Tour to institute workshops on asset building opportunities at the Workforce Commission’s Business and Career Solutions Center. These centers will also supply the space necessary to provide the free tax services to persons with disabilities and their families.

DPNs will begin to enhance and expand our coalition by first utilizing the contact information in the Louisiana Workforce Commission’s existing database of clients with disabilities that have been serviced within the Centers in the past year.

The DPN objective is to market this REI Tour though a wide range of powerful strategies.  Utilizing the "Facebook" online networking community is an effective tool for not only drawing individuals to our network, but can also be used for advertising special events, daily news feeds, financial/employment blogs and groups where employers can interact with the members in private groups. This network has a professional interface, user friendly, widely accepted in today’s society, and also serves as a massive emailing system to reach our partners.  DPNs will use the Louisiana Workforce Commission’s website (laworks.net), the Work Pays Coalition website (work-pays.org), and the DPN page on facebook.com to provide information to potential clients and service providers.  Setup marketing presentations and advisory committees to compliment the media/marketing efforts. People with disabilities will also be invited to be a part of the workgroup so that they can share a first-hand account of the challenges and barriers currently affecting them.   We will ensure that all marketing strategies reflect the diverse needs of the disability community and never assume that one strategy will work for every individual.
